Learning Disabilities does not mean a lack of intelligence. In order for a student to be diagnosed with a learning disability they require having a average IQ. Dyslexia is only one type of learning disability and is explained briefly here

What are the signs of dyslexia?The problems displayed by individuals with dyslexia involve difficulties in acquiring and using written language. It is a myth that individuals with dyslexia “read backwards,” although spelling can look quite jumbled at times because students have trouble remembering letter symbols for sounds and forming memories for words. Other problems experienced by people with dyslexia include the following:

Sight words are the words that we do not read rather recognize by sight. They are also some of the words that do not follow the normal rules. Often once students learn their sight words reading becomes much less frustrating and they begin to find more success, increasing their interest.

Reading
When reading with your child please keep in mind the different reading strategies. Ask your child questions about what you are reading. Help your child by asking them what strategies they can use to help them figure out words. Provide lots of opportunities to read as it will assist in improving vocabulary and reading fluency.
